SA Olive Industry celebrates its best

The results of the first SA Olive Awards were announced last week (28 September 2006) during a gala dinner at Laborie in Paarl. Winners were awarded in three categories: Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Table Olives and Achiever of the Year. According to the organisers, SA Olive, it is the first table olive competition held locally and the first time that a person or entity has been recognised for outstanding achievement.

The photo shows Richard Atkinson from Waterfall River Farm (Best Extra Virgin Olive Oil), SA Olive chairman Andries Rabie and Gerrie Duvenage (SA Olive Achiever of the year and Best Table Olives).

PRODUCT OF THE MONTH
Riebeeck Kasteel Olive Boutique’s Green Olive Wholegrain Mustard

The Olive Boutique in Riebeeck Kasteel was established in 2000, when Michael & Juliana Meredith imported an olive oil press from Italy. Since then, they have produced not only their extra virgin olive oil, but a range of flavoured olives (including those famous Kalamata’s in a Blueberry Dressing), paste, tapenade and a huge range of beauty products. And now they have added a brand new taste sensation to their range of products – olive mustard!

This new mustard will be officially launched at the Tapenade Olive Shop stall at the Jozi Cheese & Wine festival on the 6th – 8th October 2006. See Below

Cooking with Olive Oil – the facts

As has often happened since the shop opened, I was recently in a heated…let’s call it a discussion with a gentleman who insisted that “olive oil, like other nut oils, changes it’s properties if the temperature is higher than 30 degrees and that is why it should be kept in the refrigerator.” Unfortunately, this just served to highlight again just how many myths and misinformation is out there when it comes to cooking with and using olive oil.

So, what is the truth?

Olive festival in Gauteng

Ok, I know the title says “Jozi Cheese & Wine Festival”, but it’s going to resemble something more like a Cape invasion of these parts, because if you visit Helderfontein Estate this weekend you will find stalls from a whole range of the country’s best olive producers, including Karoo Olives from Beaufort-West, Belvedere from Paarl, Morgenster from Somerset-West, The Olive Tree with products from Chaloner and their popular chocolate fountain (to see pictures of our August tasting event with this decadent fountain, click here) & Willow Creek from Worcester.

And whatever these fine people do not bring up north, we will have on show! You are welcome to visit the Tapenade Olive Shop stall (Stall 87) where we will feature a wide range of olive products – with plenty to tempt the taste buds. Amongst others, we will have Riebeeck Kasteel Olive Boutique flavoured olives (yes, including the Blueberry ones!), Kloovenburg’s dipping olive oils (think Chili & Garlic, or Oregano, Basil & Black pepper) and a variety of pastes and tapenades spread out for sampling. Come and be dazzled by the variety of products produced by the local industry.
