Groves & Vineyards - Olive and Wine Fair at Casalinga Ristorante Italiano - 14th & 5th July 2006

Casalinga Restaurant in Muldersdrift is organising an olive and wine fair with stalls from some of the local olive estates, including Hamilton Russell, Kloovenburg, Tokara, Morgenster, Fairview, Vesuvio and Belvedere. Celebrate the Karoo

We are dedicating this issue of the Tapenade Olive Shop monthly newsletter to the Karoo!

Tapenade Olive Shop stocks an extensive range of boutique/estate style South African extra virgin olive oils from all the main olive growing regions in the country. The oils are grouped into place of origin and customers are always surprised to see the Karoo being represented.

Because of the Western Cape’s Mediterranean climate and the fact that olives, as is the case in Europe, are associated with wine (sometimes as a secondary crop for vintners), olives in South Africa have also become intertwined with wine in people’s minds. Certainly, olive groves are not the first thing that spring to mind when the semi-desert that is the Karoo is mentioned.

Don’t be fooled. Turns out that the combination of hot dry summers, cold winters and pH neutral soil which makes olives thrive in the Med can more than adequately be duplicated under irrigation in the Karoo, and so the Karoo’s fine collection of olive products can more than hold their own when the list of South Africa’s top producers is compiled.

Our local Karoo products in Tapenade Olive Shop are from Outshoorn, Beaufort-West and Laingsburg, and includes Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Garlic infused and Lime infused Olive Oil, Olives stuffed with Pimento’s or Garlic (see below our featured product of the month), troubes and much more.



Camdeboo Karoo Venison

Writers Annatjie Reynolds, Lynne Minnaar and Albè Neetling all live in (and love!!) the Karoo. They compiled a 200-page, full colour complete guide to venison with photographs, anecdotes, historical facts and other information to make this more than just a recipe book, but also a souvenir for tourists and hunters and everyone that loves the Karoo.

The recipes are from trendy (venison in the Weber!) to traditional and are all from the kitchens of local women like the Cape Boer horse champion. Other recipes are from a former concert pianist, a mayor, a meat packer – all beautifully photographed as they cooked their specialties. The book is also available in Afrikaans. Order online

Karoo Green Olives stuffed with Garlic

Wally and Janine Nigrini have been farming olives at the farm Renosterkop just outside Beaufort West in the Karoo, since 1989. The farm has been in the Nigrini family for three generations and Wally’s father planted 8 000 olives in 1960 making it one of the four original olive farms in South Africa.

One of the products they offer is the Green Queen Olives individually Stuffed with a pickled garlic clove, also farmed on Renosterkop. The olives are bottled in brine and vinegar.

These olives are the perfect hors d’oevre and will satisfy even the most discriminating garlic lover’s craving. It is great for garnishing salads, pasta or potato dishes, or use as a topping on pizza. Chop and add to your favorite salsa. Nestle a stuffed olive into the curve of grilled prawns to make skewers. Or use it as the perfect finishing touch for any savory or salty martini mix!

Karoo Moon

New in Tapenade Olive Shop this month is the wonderful range of sauces, relishes, jams and jellies from Karoo Moon Trading Company, developed by Lisa Watermeyer and Judi Sheard who live in Graaff-Reinet in the Karoo.

The product range includes a “Quince-essential jelly” that compliments venison and pork, but is also delicious on freshly baked scones and buttered bread.

The “Complimint Sauce”, the perfect accompaniment to Roast Karoo Lamb or mutton, is made from finely chopped fresh mint. Other favourites include a “Bread & Butter Pickle” and a “Sublime Beetroot Jam”.
